After working as a doctoral student at the University of Liège (grant from the Fonds pour la recherche en sciences humaines) and as a visiting doctoral student at the Centre Roland-Mousnier (Sorbonne University), Alexandre Goderniaux is currently working as a postdoctoral fellow at the Universities of Neuchâtel and Lille. His field of specialization is the news print of politico-religious conflicts (1515-1629).
During his doctorate, Alexandre mainly devoted his research to the polemical production of zealous Catholics. After publishing several articles on the subject (see, for example, “L’Union par le passé”), he defended a thesis at the University of Liège entitled: Une autre foi, une autre France. Les libelles imprimés par les catholiques zélés durant les guerres de Religion (1585-1629).
A research associate at the History Department of the Bibliothèque nationale de France from 2022 to 2025, Alexandre is also pursuing research into 16th and 17th century political texts. In 2024, he published Un coup de majesté manqué, a critical edition and commentary on eleven printed documents published on the occasion of the Estates General of 1588.
Within the framework of the Capturing the Present project, Alexandre’s research aims to question the notion of “imperial actuality” by determining whether the Empire’s multiple presents were known to the various populations united under Charles V’s authority. To this end, he is studying the repercussions of a selection of events through printed news items published in the various imperial territories.
